Veolia Water Ireland has been appointed to deliver €9 million upgrades to the Liscarton Water Treatment Plant in Navan.

The project involves the upgrading of the raw water intake works, pumping station, disinfection infrastructure and water treatment processes as well as the construction of new raw water tanks and pumps. Solid and liquid residual treatment infrastructure will also be included as part of the works.

Constructed in 1972, the plant supplies drinking water to homes and business in Navan. The upgrades will ensure the the Navan water supply can be removed from the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA's) Remedial Action List (RAL). It is also expected to improve the treatment of the existing discharges to the River Blackwater and improve the energy efficiency of the plant.

Works are due to commence in the coming weeks and are scheduled to be completed by the end of 2019.

Speaking about the project, William McKnight, Irish Water Engineer, said: "This essential upgrade will improve drinking water quality and safeguard water supply for over 40,000 people in Navan. The works will be contained onsite so there will be minimum disruption to local businesses and residents."
