The Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT) has announced a high-level event to explore the development plans for the Parnell Square Cultural Quarter – featuring a lineup of speakers from the lead design team, including Brendan Teeling (Dublin City Librarian), Kieran O'Brien (Grafton Architects) and Grainne Shaffrey (Shaffrey Architects).
This highly ambitious urban regeneration project aims to create a new cultural landmark for Dublin City, as well as revitalising the public domain around the Georgian Parnell Square. The project will involve the restoration of a Georgian terrace on the north of the square and the construction of a dramatic new building behind it opening on to Dorset Street.
The Hugh Lane Gallery, a new Dublin City Library, the existing Irish Writers' Centre, the Dublin Writers Museum, the Gate Theatre, Poetry Ireland and the Garden of Remembrance will create a significant array of cultural activity in and around the square. The development will also involve the creation of a new public plaza on the north of Parnell Square.
Dr Paul Horan, DIT Head of Campus Planning who is leading a team in the strategic planning and delivery of the relocation of DIT to Grangegorman, will also speak at the event.
This is one of a number of events being presented by DIT Environment and Planning in celebration of Planning Week (5-9 November), which provides an opportunity to explore the field of planning - spatial, physical, town, urban and regional planning.
On Wednesday 7 November, Joseph Corr, the President of the Irish Planning Institute (IPI) and a graduate of the DIT MSc in Spatial Planning, will visit DIT to talk to planning students.
On Thursday 8 November, DIT students will attend a Panel Discussion on "My Life as a Planner" at the Mansion House, hosted by the IPI and the Lord Mayor of Dublin.
Planning Week is presented by the Irish Planning Institute, the all island professional body representing planners engaged in physical and environmental planning in Ireland.
