Sinn Féin Housing spokesperson Eoin Ó Broin has called for the introduction of a NCT style certification to tackle poor rental standards.

He also urged Housing Minister Eoghan Murphy to bring forward the 25% annual inspection rate target for local authorities.

Deputy Ó Broin spoke out in concern following recent reports from the Times Ireland that renters are being offered beds to share with other tenants in properties across Dublin.

He said: "One year ago a Sinn Féin motion calling on the government to bring forward measures to ensure compliance with minimum standard regulations for the private rented sector was passed by the Dáil.

"The motion called on the government to increase resources for local authorities to ensure that a tough inspection scheme is put in place. It also called for an NCT style certification system for landlords and a review of penalties for those who break the law.

"The Minister for Housing has been talking about changes to the enforcement powers for the Residential Tenancies Board for months and still the legislation is not forthcoming.

"The delay is puzzling as I am sure the Minister knows that he would have the support of the Dáil if he brings forward the changes to the rental sector he has referenced since September.

"The more time that passes the worse the situation gets for those struggling to find an affordable room to rent."

He continued: "The government ignored renters in its Budget.

"Sinn Féin built on the motion that was passed last year in our own Alternative Budget for 2019.

"We committed to increasing funding for local authority inspections of private rental accommodation by €5m to bring forward the 25% inspection rate target. We also reiterated our call for the introduction of a NCT certification for rental standards," concluded Mr Ó Broin.
