Shannon Venue Project Must Return To Masterplan Stage

Construction News Image
Plans for a major civic centre in Shannon have been dealt with a major blow.

The government is insisting the project returns to the masterplan stage after voluntary group Croí na Sionna pulled its plans.

Clare County Council has been called on to progress the Shannon Venue project.

Commenting on the role of the council, Fianna Fail General Election Candidate, Cllr Cathal Crowe said: "In and of itself, this probably makes sense, but I would have serious concerns about the County Council being left on its own, without Government support and investment, to deliver on this desperately needed project.

"The Shannon Venue is a shovel-ready project that sought and required much greater funding to proceed to its construction phase. Yet last week, the Government announced a paltry €100,000 under its Urban Regeneration and Development Fund.

"I share Mr Barret's concerns and frustrations. 10 months since the Board presented to the Government, the Taoiseach and his government are now insisting that the entire project must return to the masterplan stage.

"This makes zero sense considering that the project has been central to masterplans for the town of Shannon since 2008. Furthermore the project has approved planning permission and has already been heavily bankrolled by local individuals, companies and Clare County Council.

"The Government need to step up to the mark and work with the County Council, and help them deliver the project.

"Clare County Council cannot be left to walk this path alone – Government funding for the Shannon Venue is essential. There is no two ways about it," concluded Crowe.
