The work is taking place in Ballinalee and Springtown and is expected to be completed by April 2019.
The work is part of Irish Water's National Leakage Reduction Programme.
The works in Ballinalee involve the replacement of approximately 2.5 kilometres of aged cast iron water mains with high density polyethylene (plastic) pipes. The section of works will take place in Ballinalee Village.

The works in Springtown involve the replacement of approximately 3.6 km of problematic water mains with high density polyethylene (plastic) pipe material.
The section of works will take place along the R194.
Derek Deignan, Regional Lead on the Leakage Reduction Programme, said: "The replacement of these aging water mains in the Ballinalee and Springtown areas of Co Longford will improve security of supply for local residents and businesses alike. Replacing the existing water mains with new modern pipes will provide a long-term solution to ensure a safe and secure water supply is delivered to customers. Irish Water understands this type of work can be inconvenient and will ensure our work crews make every effort to minimise any disruption these works may cause."
