Funding of €800,000 has been awarded to Mayo County Council to help boost tourism in the region.

Approximately €200k each will be allocated to four projects, which include the Great Western Greenway in Kilmeena & Turlough, The Bowers Walk in Ballinrobe, Achill Island Greenway and the Bangor Trail & Erris Access bridge.

Minister for Rural and Community Development, Michael Ring TD, announced the funding yesterday, 08 January.

Speaking at the announcement in the Museum of Country Life, Turlough, Cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council, Blackie Gavin, said: "I am delighted to welcome this great news for the whole county of Mayo. It's important for tourism in Mayo to improve and extend these projects.

"I would like to single out the great work done by the Head of Tourism, Padraig Philbin, and his team for getting this funding over the line."

Head of Tourism for Mayo County Council, Padraig Philbin, added: "We are delighted to receive almost a million euro in funding for the four projects across Mayo.

"It's important we continue to stay ahead of the game in marking Mayo out as a great tourist destination and the works which will go into the four projects will ensure that.

"These schemes would only be possible thanks to local landowners and we are grateful for their continued support."
