Sinn Féin's 'No Consent, No Sale' Bill has been passed in the Dáil today, 31 January.
The Bill from Teachta Pearse Doherty aims to ensure that banks cannot sell a homeowner's mortgages to a vulture fund or third party without the borrower's consent.
Deputy Doherty said: "This is a momentous day in the fight against vulture funds in Ireland. The Dáil has now voted in support of my legislation to prevent Irish mortgages being sold to vulture funds without the consent of the mortgage holders.
He added: "Given the amount of banks now seeking to offload their mortgages to vultures it is imperative that this legislation now moves speedily through the remaining legislative stages and I have asked the Finance Committee to facilitate and early meeting to go through the legislative scrutiny.
"Despite its opposition to my bill the government must listen to the will of the Dáil and allow this legislation to progress as speedily as possible."
