Irish Water has commenced work in County Laois as part of a €10 million investment in sewers across the East Midlands Region.
The sewer network in Portlaoise, Rathdowney, Mountrath and Mountmellick is being upgraded as part of the programme.
Cleaning and survey works are taking place on the network, ahead of rehabilitation works over a 1km section of the sewers.
The works, which are being carried out using non-dig technology, will address the structural defects in the wastewater networks and significantly reduce the likelihood of sewer collapses and blockages.
The project is due for completion in Quarter 2, 2019.
