The government has been urged to build a secondary school in Kinnegad, the third largest town in Westmeath.
Local Labour TD Willie Penrose raised the issue again after recent years have seen the population grow to more than 3,000 in the immediate area.
Minister for Education and Skills, Joe McHugh TD confirmed that the decision to build the post-primary facility will be kept under review.
Deputy Penrose said: "The community are eager to secure a secondary school for the hundreds of young people in the area who have to leave each morning and travel considerable distances to get their second level education.
"My colleague Denis Leonard has been very vocal on this issue and has highlighted that there is suitable land zoned for educational use in Kinnegad."
He added: "Along with my colleague Denis Leonard, I will continue to put pressure on Minister Joe McHugh to ensure this vital project is delivered for the young people and families in Kinnegad."
