Dublin Shopping Centre Redevelopment Stalled Over Tesco Dispute

Construction News Image
Plans for the redevelopment of Phibsborough Shopping Centre in Dublin have suffered a major setback.

According to reports, the project has been stalled due to a dispute between the developer and supermarket chain, Tesco.

This redevelopment forms part of a larger regeneration of the Dublin 7 area.

Fianna Fáil's local election candidate, Mary Fitzpatrick fears the dispute may affect the entire development of the area and has written to both parties urging them to find a way forward.

"It is disappointing that the site's developer has yet to secure buy-in for their plans from the anchor tenant. Fact is that the longer this impasse continues without intervention residents and businesses continue to suffer," she said.

"While I have previously objected to elements of the plan, I certainly wouldn't wish for this whole project to be shelved. In my view this site presented a unique opportunity to revive a neglected city village and make it a quality, sustainable urban centre where people of all ages can live, work and socialise.

"But that said, any meaningful attempt to regenerate this dilapidated, run down eyesore has worth and even more so if our Local Authority fully engages with its developer to advocate for the needs of nearby residents. Dublin City Council cannot look on as the design mistakes of the past are potentially repeated on a prime urban site in the heart of an otherwise vibrant community.

"As the lead developer with Bohemians on the Dalymount site, the Council can have significant influence on the future of this Shopping Centre if they properly liaise with each of the other key stakeholders. I have written to the Deputy Chief Executive, Brendan Kenny this morning to request that talks are entered into for an agreement to be urgently reached in this dispute over the plan's design."
