A planning application has been submitted for the works, which include the construction and operation of a new raw water intake to abstract water from the River Slaney, the construction of a new pumping station, surge vessel and ESB substation.

The upgrade is required as the existing intake works which is located at Vinegar Hill water treatment plant on the River Slaney is prone to flooding on a regular basis.
This project forms part of the utility's investment plan. Delivery of the business plan will involve a €5.5 billion investment in capital spending on drinking water and wastewater quality and capacity and new infrastructure up to 2021.
