IT Carlow has secured €260,000 in funding to support electrical and carpentry apprenticeships at the institution.
The investment forms part of €7.5m government funding to support craft apprenticeship provision across Ireland.
Local Sinn Féin TD, Deputy Kathleen Funchion has urged young people in Carlow to look into the field of apprenticeships locally.
Teachta Funchion added: "This funding provided by the Department of Education and Skills through the Higher Education Authority (HEA) should be the start of ongoing increased investment into areas of training and upskilling in trades for our community.
"Students who begin the Leaving Certificate this week should know that these options are out there and that apprenticeships can offer significant career options if the experience and training is of a decent standard.
"This particular funding for IT Carlow will support the roll-out of new syllabi for apprenticeships in carpentry and electrical training. I would encourage students in Carlow to explore these new apprenticeship opportunities."
