Plans for a new 23km greenway in County Cork are moving forward after funding was allocated under the National and Regional Greenway Fund.
Ministers Shane Ross and Brendan Griffin announced the funding on Friday, 21 June.
The Midleton Youghal (MY) Greenway project secured €8 million, which will facilitate the development of the route on the disused railway line between Midleton and Youghal.
Welcoming the progress, Mayor of the County of Cork, Cllr Christopher O'Sullivan said: "On the week where we welcome Ireland's Full IRONMAN to Cork with Youghal playing centre stage it is fantastic to receive today's confirmation of MY Greenway which is going to be another fantastic addition to the people of East Cork. It is now my wish that this type of development would be considered for other areas in Cork County."
MY Greenway will be an important addition to tourism facilities across Cork and will serve as a vital local recreational amenity.
Negotiations are well underway with Irish Rail and CIE Group Properties to secure a licence to develop and maintain the Greenway.
