The £160 million A6 Randalstown - Castledawson Dualling scheme is on track for completion in 2021, according to a Sinn Féin MLA.
This major project will see 14.7kms of the A6 North Western Transport Corridor upgraded between Randalstown and Castledawson. It will strengthen transport links and bring long term benefits to road users and the local community.
South Down MLA Declan Kearney has spoke out after receiving a detailed briefing and a site meeting on the Randalstown to Toome section.
He said: "Myself and local Councillor Henry Cushinan received a detailed briefing from officials on the current status of the A6 Dualling Scheme.
"We were appraised of progress regarding the Zone Two phase from Randalstown to Toome, and also projections on site works on the Zone One phase through to the Castledawson roundabout.
"We were also provided with an opportunity to carry out a site inspection on the Zone Two section which is nearing completion. It is clear that the design and finishing detail on this part of the project is being carried out to a very high standard.
"We viewed two underpass structures under construction which will provide access for livestock on farmland located on either side of the new carriageway. A total of twelve such structures will be built along the full length of the dualling scheme. Another significant feature of the overall project will be the four dedicated footbridges to provide pedestrian access across the carriageway between Randalstown and Castledawson."
Both MLA Kearney and Cllr Cushinan remain confident the project will be completed on schedule.
Since the beginning of the major road scheme, the total number of vehicles travelling between Castledawson and Randalstown each day has increased from 18,000 to 20,000.
