Brookfield Mill in the Ardoyne area of Belfast is set to be transformed into new social housing.
Belfast City Council's planning committee granted planning permission for the project which will see the mill redeveloped into 77 social homes.
Local Sinn Féin councillor Ryan Murphy welcomed the news and hopes it will signal the launch of other projects in the area.
"Given the levels of Housing stress in North Belfast, this development will be very much welcomed in the area," he said.
"We know there isn’t much space for development in areas like Ardoyne and this scheme will renovate what is a derelict building into a state of the art living accommodation.
"It will give that part of Flax Street the facelift it deserves and hopefully means we can now start looking at other regeneration projects for that area.
"With the housing crisis only deepening in this city, we believe that this will offer some hope to those on waiting lists but more still needs to be done."
