The SDLP has hit out following the announcement that the three largest electricity suppliers are to increase their prices by up to 8 per cent.
The party's Economy Spokesperson Daniel McCrossan MLA said it will have a serious impact on consumers struggling with the cost of living.
He said: "Wholesale energy prices have continued to fall over the last three months but consumers have yet to see a drop in their annual charge. After Power NI announced a 6% increase in prices, it was certain that other providers would follow suit.
"The real threat here is that more families and vulnerable people in our communities will be forced into fuel poverty. While utility costs rise, many homes will not see a similar rise in their income, meaning that this will be a difficult winter for many."
