A public enquiry is to be carried out over the A5 upgrade, the road from the border at Aughnacloy, Co Tyrone, to L'Derry to a dual carriageway.

Sinn Féin MP Órfhlaith Begley said any delay in the start of the A5 road upgrade is disappointing.

She said: "Any further delay in this project is deeply frustrating. It is particularly disappointing that no other political party responded to the consultation to support the project. This is nothing short of negligence particularly by those who are otherwise very vocal in their criticism.

"However, the Department hopes to be on the ground with the construction of Phase 1 in 2020, if all goes to plan and I welcome this determination.

"To this end, I requested an urgent meeting with the permanent secretary of the department to discuss the proposed public inquiry and its terms and duration.

"It is deeply frustrating that a small minority of vested interests are continuing to try to stall the commencement of the A5 against the will of the overwhelming majority of the people here.

"The A5 road upgrade is vital in order to improve road safety, cut journey times and help stimulate the economy of the wider north west. We are determined to continue to work to see construction begin as soon as possible."
