Cork County Council Celebrates Engineers Ireland Nomination

Cork County Council has been recognised for its work on the East Tip Haulbowline Island Remediation Project.

The project, which was delivered in conjunction with RPS Consulting Engineers, PJ Hegarty & Sons and the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, has been shortlisted for an Engineers Ireland award.

This remediation scheme saw the transformation of this waste area with its negative industrial legacy into a public recreational amenity which promises to greatly benefit locals and visitors alike.

Plans are currently being progressed to open the park once a lease has been finalised. This will enable Cork County Council to operate the area as a public recreation amenity.

Chief Executive of Cork County Council, Tim Lucey commented: "The challenges presented by the East Tip site, including the location and nature of the site and the nature of the waste material, were quite unique and demanded innovative engineering solutions. The successful delivery of this landmark project for Cork County Council - which has transformed Cork Harbour, and came in under budget - is a great achievement of civil and environmental engineering. It's great to see this recognised by Engineers Ireland."

The East Tip Haulbowline Island Remediation Project will compete for the Engineering Project of the Year 2019 in at an Engineers Ireland ceremony in November.

Mayor of the County of Cork, Cllr Christopher O'Sullivan added: "The remediation works on the East Tip carried out by Cork County Council, with RPS, PJ Hegarty & Sons and the Department required innovative engineering skills and knowledge and is an environmental success story. I would like to see the people of Cork getting behind this project and give their vote to the remediation of the East Tip on Haulbowline Island for the Engineers Ireland project of the year award – it's only a click – and will help get this project the recognition it deserves."

Those interested in voting for Engineering Project of the Year can do so here.
