Local Schoolchildren Discover Importance Of Craughwell Water Main

Construction News Image
Pupils from Coldwood National School in Craughwell, Co Galway, have been visited by a number of staff from Irish Water.

Irish Water Asset Delivery Regional Lead, Eunan Canavan and his colleague Sean Corrigan were on hand to teach the children about their drinking water, while also highlighting some local projects. These included an interactive workshop and some scientific experiments.

There was a large focus put on the 20 kilometre €13.8 million water main which passes by the children's school. The new water main once commissioned will bring a safe and secure water supply from the Tuam Regional Water Scheme to the homes, businesses and schools of 6,000 people in Loughrea, Craughwell and surrounding areas.

Commenting on the visit to Coldwood National School, Eunan Canavan said: "This was a great opportunity to meet our local school and tell the students and teachers about the work Irish Water and our partners in Galway County Council are doing to fix our really old water network and improve water treatment to protect the health of generations to come.

"Water is one of the most essential resources on earth, critical for human health, the production of food and for industrial activity. It was great to see the interest that the children have in their local community, we hope that they gained a good understanding of the challenges that we face, and the important role that scientists and engineers play in our daily lives."

Ms Jackson, principal and teacher of fifth and sixth classes, added: "We were delighted with the visit from Irish Water and the children really enjoyed the experiments. It was a wonderful opportunity for them to gain a real understanding of all the processes that are involved before they turn on their taps to get a glass of water! Our thanks to Eunan and Sean for a great presentation."
