Some 60 environmental projects across County Cork are set to move forward with new government investment.
Cork County Council has announced the successful applicants in the 2019 Community Environment Action Fund, which supports projects or initiatives that help increase awareness of environmental issues locally, or help communities become more sustainable.
Successful applicants include Cycle Sense who are aiming to develop a Skibbereen Cycle Bus, East Cork Biodiversity Network plans to plant more than 6,400 native trees while the children of Ballyhass Childcare will get to enjoy a Tutti Frutti garden with funding made available for their fruit trees and bushes for biodiversity project.
This year's fund had a special focus on climate and biodiversity, with the Department of Communications, Climate Action and the Environment allocating €33,637 to Cork County which was matched with €34,299 by Cork County Council.
Commenting on the successful applicants, Mayor of the County of Cork, Cllr Christopher O'Sullivan said: "Recently we have seen a huge sea change in attitude towards the climate crisis. Local communities are coming up with more and more innovative ways to face the challenges. Steps taken at a local level can have global impact. There were some really original and creative solutions in the projects that went in for funding this year and each one will have a positive impact on the local community and environment and on the health of the planet and people."
Chief Executive of Cork County Council Tim Lucey added: "Sustainability, biodiversity and climate change are becoming core strategic considerations for local authorities and Cork County Council has a key role to play in leading by example and working with local communities to meet these challenges. The Community Environment Action Fund allows the Council to support local community groups, schools and other organisations in undertaking small scale projects at local level. Working hand in hand with community groups we can drive real change."
