A key road scheme in County Cork has taken a major stride forward with the appointment of international firm SWECO.
Cork County Council struck a deal with SWECO for the N25 Carrigtohill Midleton Road Improvement Scheme, which has been under development for a number of years. The scheme will facilitate a safer flow of traffic on the N25, along with sustainable growth for Midleton and its surrounds.
The engineering consultancy will serve as Technical Advisors to progress the scheme through to design and associated environmental assessment. They will provide all engineering, environmental, economic and appraisal services required to deliver the project through the planning and design phases.
Speaking after the contract signing, Chief Executive of Cork County Council, Tim Lucey, said: "This marks significant progress in this scheme to improve the transport infrastructure on the N25 corridor between Carrigtohill and Midleton. The upgrade will bring considerable improvements in journey times, accessibility and safety. The advancement of this scheme is essential to attracting industry to East Cork and opens up further opportunity beyond Carrigtwohill. It has long been proposed by Cork County Council and is included in Project Ireland 2040 and the National Development Plan."
John Nolan, Project Director at SWECO, commented: "The Cork based SWECO team are delighted to be working with Cork County Council on the planning process for this scheme which will aim to improve safety for vehicular traffic, cyclists and pedestrians on the N25 and will strive to improve journey times and capacity between Carrigtohill and Midleton."
Public consultation will begin on the project in the latter half of this year.
