Belfast-Bangor Road Scheme Enters Final Phase

Construction News Image
Work has begun on the final phase of a key road scheme from Belfast to Bangor.

Approximately £200,000 is being invested to install traffic signals on the A2 at Ballymoney Road, improving road safety and traffic progression on a busy commuter route.

A number of restrictions remain in place to facilitate the work.

The scheme has been ongoing for the last seven weeks, with work mostly carried out overnight. Traffic continues to be reduced to one lane in each direction between the junctions of Carney Hill and Coyles Lane from 7.30pm to 6am on weekdays. A temporary 30mph speed limit and a No Overtaking Order remains in place during these hours.

Works on the A2 affecting the Craigdarragh Road have also been extended to 13 March 2020 due to bad overnight weather conditions. A diversion will be in place via A2 Belfast Road, Ballyrobert Road, Bridge Road South, Bridge Road and Craigdarragh Road.

The Department for Infrastructure has also reminded drivers of high sided vehicles of a low bridge on Bridge Road South with clearance for vehicles at 13'0" / 3.9 metres.

From 16 March - 03 April, traffic control will again be in place on the Ballymoney Road side, overnight on weekdays from 7.30pm to 6am, to finalise the work on the junction with the A2.

During these times a diversion will be in place as detailed below:

• Eastbound: A2 Belfast Road, Rathgael Road, Newtownards Road, Bangor Road, North Road, Talbot Street, Hardford Link, Belfast Road, Holywood Road and Whinney Hill.

• Westbound: A2 Bangor Road and Whinney Hill.

• Dundonald traffic: Whinney Hill and A2 Bangor Road.

Drivers should expect some delays and are advised to leave additional time when planning any journeys in the area.
