Water main improvement works have got underway in Ballycastle, Co Mayo.
The installation works involve laying approximately 6km of interconnecting mains pipe from the existing Lacken reservoir (Ballina Regional Water Supply Scheme), into the Ballycastle Public Water Supply and decommissioning the existing water treatment plant at Ballycastle.
This comes as Irish Water looks to connect the Ballycastle water supply to the Ballina Regional Water Supply Scheme.
Source Civil is delivering the works on behalf of the utility, with completion expected in Q2 2020.
Explaining more about the works, Martin Temple, Irish Water Regional lead, said: "Irish Water is committed to safeguarding the water supply for customers in Ballycastle and surrounding areas. The project will involve laying approximately 6km of interconnecting mains pipe from the existing Lacken reservoir (Ballina RWSS), into the Ballycastle Public Water Supply along the L-5I87, L-1114 and R-314 to Ballycastle village and decommissioning the existing water treatment plant at Ballyknock. Temporary road closures will be required and diversions will be outlined and sign posted. The contractor will endeavour to maintain local access for residents and emergency traffic during the works."
Once complete, this project will improve the water supply for 360 local residents and businesses.
