Translink To Revolutionise Bus Shelters

Construction News Image
Translink has set out its plans for newly-designed, revolutionary 'Insignia+' style bus shelters.

The new designs includes the 'living roof' idea which would allow for wildflower gardens to be added to the new shelters. This move was previously campaigned for by Belfast High Sheriff, Alliance Councillor Michael Long, who is delighted with the new designs.

Councillor Long added: "As we reach the end of the COP26 summit, it is vital we do everything we can to mitigate the impact of climate change. These new shelters will revolutionise Translink's local offering, with the capability of solar-powered energy efficient LED lighting, alongside the living roof plans and a number of other options.

"Even small changes will make a difference and so I am delighted my suggestion to Translink, based on their successful use in places like the Netherlands, to make our bus shelters more environmentally friendly, is now progressing.

"These shelters will allow for a wildflower roof option which is great for bees and other insects, whilst the solar powered lighting will also help make a positive change.

"I hope a pilot can now go ahead and any economic assessment balances the financial issues with the positive changes these shelters could have on our environment."

The 'Insignia+' style shelter design is now subject to an economic appraisal.
