Active travel schemes are continuing to make a difference across County Tipperary thanks to over €5.1 million funding.

A total of 35 towns and villages in Tipperary have shared the funding to boost active travel works. In March 2021, Tipperary County Council was allocated €4.6m to fund an ambitious Active Travel programme within the Tipperary County Council area. With this funding from the National Transport Authority, Tipperary County Council has delivered a range of improvements for pedestrians and cyclists with many projects completed in recent weeks. A further allocation for the provision of Additional Outdoor Infrastructure was secured during the year to create Covid-friendly safe urban public spaces.

Active Travel works included the construction of new footpaths to provide an orbital walking route in Roscrea; safe routes to school created by providing footpaths and pedestrian crossings in Upperchurch and Castleiney; improved connectivity between residential areas and schools within Kilcash and Killusty villages; provision of a walkway in Fethard town; a footpath link from Newport town centre to new town park and onwards; improvements to an existing walkway and cycle path adjacent to the River Suir in Thurles; provision of high quality footpaths at Coleville Road, Clonmel and connecting Marlfield Village and Clonmel.

Mayor of Tipperary County Council, Cllr Marie Murphy said: "I am delighted to see so many projects come to fruition in what has been the first year of NTA funding to rural local authorities for Active Travel measures. The construction of new footpaths and pedestrian crossings, along with other upgrades and improvements to outdoor public spaces, will result in a safer, healthier and more sustainable way for people to get about and enjoy their local area."
