Call For State-Led Investment In Green Hydrogen

The Irish government has come under pressure to deliver state-led investment to realise the country's potential of becoming a world leader in green hydrogen production.

Sinn Féin representative Darren O'Rourke TD, who published the Hydrogen Strategy Bill 2021 in December, has called for greater use of offshore wind across the country.

The Meath East TD said: "Sinn Féin recognises the valuable role green hydrogen can play in the decarbonisation of sectors where electrification may not be an option.

"From my engagement with stakeholders in the sector to date, it is clear that green hydrogen could help us meet our 2030 and 2050 climate targets, including in industry, heavy transport and heating.

"Ireland has one of the best offshore wind resources in the world and capturing a portion of this for the production of green hydrogen could deliver significant environmental benefits, green jobs and a return for the state.

"Inaction from successive governments has left us lagging behind when it comes to the development of our massive offshore wind potential. Unfortunately, we seem to be repeating the same mistake when it comes to green hydrogen."

This comes after the Irish Wind Energy Association published a new report examining the potential role of green hydrogen in Ireland's energy transition.

Deputy O'Rourke added: "Our neighbours in Scotland are leading the way on offshore wind and, in relation to hydrogen, they published their first strategy seven years ago.

"I would like to see plans for state-led investment in this area to ensure a return can be realised for citizens.

"A comprehensive hydrogen strategy would also signal that Ireland is taking this energy source seriously and encourage investment in the area.

"The target to reduce emissions by 51% by 2030 will be challenging. Government must take full advantage of every opportunity to achieve it."
