Advanced Site Works Begin On Enniskillen Southern Bypass Scheme

Advanced site works on the Enniskillen Southern Bypass scheme have begun.

The works include site clearance, fencing and NIE diversionary.

Infrastructure Minister Nichola Mallon said: "I acutely recognise that the Enniskillen Southern Bypass scheme is of significant importance to the town of Enniskillen and the surrounding area.

"On 11 May 2021, I was pleased to announce my decision to proceed with the scheme and make the statutory orders. The Direction Order, Bridge Orders and Vesting Order for the scheme have been made and are now operative.

"In line with my commitment to do all that I can to deliver this scheme, I have allocated £2million for 2021-22 to progress advance site works.

"The bypass will provide a new transport link to the southern side of the town, improving the connection between the A4 Dublin Road and the A4 Sligo Road. It will also help to significantly alleviate traffic congestion in Enniskillen town centre, reducing delays, improving average journey times by approximately 50% and improving road safety.

"I am also pleased to announce that as part of my commitment to deliver green and sustainable infrastructure this scheme will also serve to enhance the town centre environment by improving air quality and noise levels and will see the introduction of active travel measures to enhance the experience of locals and visitors alike."

The project involves the construction of two kilometres of new single carriageway, including a three metre cycleway / footway, two new roundabouts and two river bridges. There will be overtaking lanes provided at each end of the new road. The existing A509 Derrylin Road will also be improved, between its junction with the new road and the A4 Sligo Road and will include a three metre cycleway / footway.
