Comber Greenway Upgrades Set To Begin

Construction News Image
Work is set to get underway on the first phase of upgrade works along Comber Greenway.

Approximately £100,000 is being invested in the scheme, which will see the existing Comber Greenway upgraded from Billy Neill Soccer School of Excellence for approximately 370 metres towards Comber.

Under this scheme, the existing greenway will be widened to provide an upgraded footway and cycleway.

Welcoming the progress of the upgrades, Infrastructure Minister Nichola Mallon said: "This scheme is part of my commitment to the delivery of active travel schemes across the North and to making walking, wheeling and cycling a safer and more attractive option for people getting around.

"This latest widening scheme will complement the widening already undertaken by the Department on the urban section between Holywood Arches and Billy Neill country park which has seen a large increase in numbers using it during the Covid pandemic."

Work will get underway on Monday 28 March and is expected to take approximately six weeks to complete.

Minister Mallon added: "I am also pleased to announce the commencement of a pilot scheme to install wayfinding signage between Knock Road and East Link Road which will assist locals and visitors when using the Comber Greenway as part of their daily commute, exercise routine or simply to enjoy the peaceful surroundings.

"I have also already given my commitment to introduce a pilot lighting scheme along the urban section with installation work due to commence over the summer.

"I am delighted that the upgrades being delivered on Comber Greenway will greatly enhance opportunities for active travel."

Users of the facility are advised that a closure of the footway and cycleway will be required to facilitate the construction process and to take extra care in the vicinity of the works.
