Roscommon Drainage Scheme On Track For Early 2023 Completion

Construction News Image
A key drainage project in Roscommon Town has reached a major milestone ahead of its scheduled completion early next year.

The Roscommon Town Main Drainage Scheme was described as a "credit to everyone involved" as it officially passed the halfway mark.

The complex scheme includes more than 7km of new sewer infrastructure, new and upgraded pumping stations and storm water overflows. The project has also seen the tunnelling of a pipe under Roscommon's railway line and River Jiggy.

Speaking about the success of the project, Cathaoirleach of Roscommon County Council Joe Murphy said: "The project is moving along quickly and with little disruption to traffic. The benefits of these works in terms of the development of Roscommon Town are immense – the capacity increase in the wastewater network will support housing and commercial development.

"People want to live and work in their own communities and this project is supporting the growth of the town."

This progress means the scheme is on track for completion in early 2023.

Irish Water’s Regional Delivery Lead Eunan Canavan added: "Irish Water is committed to continuously upgrading and developing critical infrastructure to support the growth needed in housing and across our economy. This project will also protect our environment by reducing the risk of sewer flooding in Roscommon Town and eliminating non-compliant sewer overflows into the River Jiggy.

"Together with our partners Roscommon County Council, Tobin Consulting Engineers and GMC Utilities Group, we are excited to deliver this project which will benefit the entire region when it's completed in 2023."
