New Programme Of Flood Alleviation Works Announced In Holywood

Construction News Image
A new programme of work has been announced to address flooding issues in Holywood, Co Down.

Led by NI Water, this scheme will help alleviate flooding in the My Lady's Mile area. It will involve the relining of sewers on My Lady's Mile and part of Church View, as well as the construction of a new manhole on My Lady's Mile.

To facilitate the work, a road closure will be in place from Monday 25 July for approximately four weeks.

The approved closures are as follows:

• From 25 July – 24 August: Road closure on My Lady's Mile from 9.30am – 11pm Monday to Friday.

• From 01 – 05 August: A continuous road closure on My Lady's Mile to facilitate the construction of a manhole located between Norwood Lane and Church View.

• From 15 – 24 August: Road closure on Church View between My Lady's Mile and Ean Hill junctions.

The works are being delivered during July and August to minimise disruption to local schools.

Speaking about the upcoming programme of works and restrictions, NI Water Project Manager, Nigel Nevin said: "Access will be maintained for residents and businesses located on My Lady's Mile and Church View during this time and diversion routes will be signposted for other motorists. In a bid to complete the work in the shortest possible timeframe and before schools recommence, our contractor may work longer days. Working hours along with traffic management arrangements will be monitored closely throughout the project.

"NI Water understands that work of this nature can be disruptive to the local community and would like to thank residents in advance for their patience and cooperation as we prepare to undertake this important work to alleviate flooding in the area.

"NI Water manages a network of 15,600km of sewers on a daily basis and we have invested billions in our water and wastewater infrastructure. However, no amount of investment will completely stop blocked pipes or inappropriate items polluting our environment. Items such as baby wipes and sanitary products are often the cause of out of sewer flooding which can easily be avoided by only flushing the 3Ps: pee, poo and toilet paper; everything else needs to go in the bin."
