Work is set to begin on a dynamic new public space in the heart of Dun Laoghaire town.

dlr Comhairle Contae County Council agreed a deal with Cumnor Construction to deliver the new development at Myrtle Square and Convent Lane.

When complete, this project will provide a destination point and an attractive space for locals and visitors to linger, relax, play and enjoy.

An Cathaoirleach, Councillor Mary Hanafin said: "Myrtle Square will be a new destination and meeting point in the centre of Dún Laoghaire. It will attract footfall contributing to vibrancy and energy in the retail heart of the town. The main structure will be a beacon and a local landmark. Play elements along the laneway and a large play tower in the main space will encourage play throughout the project. This project will help to elevate the standing of the town."

The completed, permanent scheme will be characterised by nature and greening. A new grove of trees, ground cover, and climbing plants will establish a calm, pleasant location. The space will feature a canopy structure, generous public seating and a bespoke multi-tiered play unit. Suds (sustainable urban drainage system) is to be utilised in the scheme. This is a method of absorbing rainwater run-off into the planted areas in a more natural way. Nature in the form of bird and bat habitat will encourage biodiversity and nature into the heart of the town.

Frank Curran, Chief Executive, dlr commented: "The design for Myrtle Square and Convent Lane has been shaped by the concept of nature led solutions. The use of trees and planting to create the space will have several benefits. Rainwater will be attenuated and filtered through the planted areas helping to control any future extreme weather conditions. The generous greening, including 66 trees, will contribute clean air to the town centre. CO2 and particulates will be captured by the extensive foliage. The greening will support local bird and insect populations. Bringing the public, particularly children, into closer contact with the natural world is an important aspect of the project."
