Schools and businesses in Balbriggan have helped encourage active travel as part of the town's 'Fresh Air Friday'.

The town's first 'Fresh Air Friday' of the new school term saw pupils and employees invited to leave the car at home for the day and choose active travel for their commute.

By walking, cycling, scooting, running or using public transport instead of driving for either their usual full journey or part of it, the people of Balbriggan are helping to reduce carbon emissions and traffic congestion, while enjoying a breath of fresh air as they start their day.

Fingal County Council, Balbriggan Tidy Towns and Our Balbriggan joined forces to deliver the initiative.

Stephen McGinn, Walking and Cycling Officer with Fingal County Council, said: "We can all make small swaps that will have a big impact on our climate and our community. Walking or scooting to school instead of putting the kids in the car, even just one or two days a week, is enough to make a positive difference to our health and our local environment."

Emma Grufferty, Principal of Balbriggan Educate Together National School, commented: "Fewer cars idling at the school gate each morning and afternoon means our pupils are breathing cleaner air. We find that when children walk to school, they arrive alert and ready to learn. They are also learning road safety skills and practicing their independence which is really positive. We are encouraging as many families as possible to make this Fresh Air Friday the first of many."

Terry O’Reilly of Balbriggan Tidy Towns added: "Balbriggan is home to a thriving business community with many retailers, cafes and offices and we are asking all of those businesses to encourage their own staff to walk or perhaps take their bike to work each Friday. Choosing Active Travel is a great way to experience all Balbriggan has to offer while also reducing traffic congestion and improving our air quality. We look forward to seeing Fresh Air Friday become a regular event for many."
