Construction News Image
Northern Ireland contractor Farrans has been recognised for its commitment to environmental practices with a Platinum award.

The firm achieved the highest level of achievement in the Business in the Community Environmental Benchmarking Survey. This survey positions organisations against sector peers and leading organisations based on environmental management and performance in key areas, as well as the extent to which environmental business practices have been embedded within corporate strategies.

Over 100 organisations from a range of different sectors measured and reported their environmental impacts including: General Manufacturing; Local Authority; Education; Utilities; Construction; ICT; and Food and Drink.

Managing Director, Dominic Lavery said: "We are very pleased to achieve the Platinum level in the BITC Environmental Benchmarking Survey, an award which is a great reflection of the efforts we are making at every level of our company to become a more sustainable business. During 2022 we have focussed our efforts on the implementation of our Environmental Sustainability Strategy focusing on carbon reduction, better waste management, biodiversity support and enhancement, environmental protection and best practice and staff engagement. I would like to take the opportunity to thank our staff for all their efforts during 2022 to make Farrans a greener and cleaner business by adapting and changing every aspect of how we work and operate, to reduce our local and wider environmental impacts."

Vicki Johnston, Sustainability Advisor at Farrans, added: "In order to achieve our goal of reaching net zero by 2040 we are bringing in new techniques. We are educating our employees and providing the resources they need to do their jobs in the most sustainable way that they can. Above all we need to have metrics – we need measurements and evaluations that we can benchmark our progress against.

"In the last year we have brought in enhanced recycling to all of our office locations, with our sites to follow. We have had Lunch n Learns which have been designed to show our people how small changes can culminate in a big difference. We have celebrated Recycling Week and had a Great Tree Giveaway for Earth Day 2022. We are working with each of our sites to explore opportunities for positive changes. At our Keynsham Recycling Plant site in Bath, for example, we have a 99.13% waste diversion rate and have partnered with Community Wood Recycling to ensure the reuse of all timber waste."
