Major Public Realm Improvement Scheme Underway In Dublin City

Construction News Image
A key public realm scheme has began development in Dublin city centre.

Approximately €6.5 million is being invested to create an enhanced and attractive pedestrian-friendly space along Liffey Street.

"I am delighted to see work beginning on this project," said the Lord Mayor of Dublin Caroline Conroy. "Liffey Street provides an important link between the north and south city-centre shopping and tourist areas. I am particularly looking forward to seeing the new pedestrian plaza when it's finished. Along with the decision to make Capel St traffic-free and with new plans due soon for College Green, it's really exciting to see pedestrians being put at the heart of city life."

Dublin City Council's Head of Roads Section, Dermot Collins commented: "The Liffey Street Public Realm Improvement Scheme design places a strong emphasis on pedestrians and when completed will create a quality pedestrian plaza, located between Strand Street and the Quays. The construction works will include a full upgrade of the asphalt carriageway, widening and repaving of footpaths and an extension of the existing pedestrian area on Liffey Street Upper to the intersection with Abbey Street."

The Liffey Street Public Realm Improvement Scheme will also incorporate the provision of planted areas, new public lighting, bicycle stands and public benches. Utility works will include the replacement of an existing gas main, the provision and installation of new watermains and the installation of new surface water sewers.

Works comprise all of Upper and Lower Liffey Street, from Henry Street to Bachelors Walk. It is anticipated that the project will take 24 months to complete, with work progressing onto Lower Liffey Street in the summer of 2023.
