Approximately 200 native trees have been donated from Translink to be planted in Newtownabbey's Monkstown Wood.
They are being delivered under Translink's Tree Management Programme and will contribute to the Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council's One Million Tree initiative.
Welcoming the donation, the Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Alderman Stephen Ross said: "I would like to thank Translink for their kind donation of 200 native trees, which is a significant contribution to Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council's One Million Tree target. We're committed to planting more trees that will create a more sustainable Borough and contribute towards tackling climate change.
"The trees will also enhance the green space for residents in the Monkstown Wood area while targeting a key objective of our Local Biodiversity Action Plan, which is to increase native woodland coverage in our Borough, as it provides a valuable habitat for a wealth of insects, mammals, birds and understory plants."
Translink Programme Manager Roy Wilson commented: "Translink place a strong emphasis on improving biodiversity and we are delighted to donate 200 trees to Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council in Monkstown Wood near the historic Bleach Green viaducts.
"This also helps support Translink's Climate Positive Strategy, which aims to create advanced public transport services and integrated networks, connect people and communities, enhance the economy, and improve health and environmental wellbeing for all.
"Translink is committed to being a good neighbour, and this donation has been delivered as part of the Tree Management Programme. The programme assesses the vegetation along the Northern Ireland Railway line, it's vital we do this to maintain the high safety standards for passengers, neighbours, and railway employees."
