Contracts have been signed for a key restoration project at Mallow Castle and the development of a new Skate Park in the local area.
Cork County Council appointed Cumnor Construction Ltd of Blarney, Cork, on a €1.6 million contract to deliver the roof restoration works at Mallow Castle House. The contractor will begin works immediately with completion expected by late 2024.
The restoration works are being undertaken as part of Cork County Council's framework plan for an integrated park network, landmark amenity and tourist destination for Mallow Castle Park, Mallow Town Park and the Spa House Park.
Work on a new Skate Park on Park Road, Mallow will also begin next month, with Browne Bros Site Services Ltd. of Carrigadrohid securing the contract to deliver the project. The new Skate Park is expected to be completed by October 2023.
Speaking at the contract signing, Deputy Mayor of the County of Cork, Cllr Deirdre O'Brien said: "The signing of these contracts for Mallow Castle House and the new Skate Park is a momentous occasion for Mallow and the surrounding region. These projects will further enhance Mallow's potential as a tourism destination and will enhance the quality of life of the local community. I look forward to seeing both projects progress and the positive changes they will bring to Mallow."
Deputy Chief Executive of Cork County Council, James Fogarty added: "The restoration of Mallow Castle House is a testament to the Council's dedication to preserving our historical assets, ensuring their longevity for generations to come. These works form part of our framework plan which includes developing the existing gardens and historic landscape at Mallow Castle together with the main Mallow Town Park and the Spa House Park. The plan allows for the phased and incremental development of the Castle Grounds and Park as a regional tourism destination and local asset, while the new Skate Park will provide a vibrant space for young people to enjoy outdoor activity."
