In June 2023, the wholesale price of electricity experienced a significant decrease of 35 percent compared to June 2022. Throughout the first half of 2023, Irish wind farms played a crucial role and supplied one-third of the total electricity on the island.
Also in June 2023, the average wholesale price of electricity in Ireland per megawatt-hour was €117.11, marking a reduction from €181.84 in the previous year. Met Éireann reported June 2023 as the warmest June on record in Ireland. The persistent hot weather conditions in recent weeks resulted in a lower share of demand met by wind energy.
On days with the highest wind power generation, the average cost of a megawatt-hour of electricity decreased even further to €106.98. However, on days when the reliance on fossil fuels was predominant, the average cost rose to €134.97 per megawatt-hour.
Noel Cunniffe, CEO of Wind Energy Ireland, said: "The first half of the year has been strong for Irish wind farms which have helped to protect Irish families and businesses from the worst effects of relying on expensive imported gas.
"New wind farms, along with solar and battery projects, will be connecting before the end of 2023 but we really need to accelerate the delivery of onshore and offshore renewables if we are to reach our legally-binding carbon emissions reduction targets."
