Essential public safety works are set to begin on a number of trees at The Dark Hedges on Bregagh Road, Armoy.
Tree safety works will commence on 20 November and are expected to be complete on or before 24 November 2023.
After concerns about the trees on Bregagh Road which are on privately owned land, the Department for Infrastructure (DfI) commissioned an independent specialist survey which found that 11 trees, out of a total of 86, are in poor condition and pose a potential risk to the public.
The DfI immediately liaised with the relevant landowners and other stakeholders, however, given the urgency of the work required, arrangements have now been made to remove six of the trees and carry out remedial work to four trees. The condition of one further tree will be assessed onsite.
The DfI said that the decision was not made lightly and whilst it acknowledges the amenity value afforded by the corridor of trees, the safety of road users is paramount.
Landowners and other stakeholders will continue to be liaised with to implement a suitable management strategy to protect the future of the other 75 trees.
In order to facilitate the works, the Bregagh Road will be closed to pedestrians as well as traffic during the works.
