The Department for Infrastructure (DfI) has initiated a procurement competition for a road safety improvement scheme in Derriaghy.
A detailed design for the scheme has been completed which includes improvement works at McKinstry Road / Derriaghy Road / The Cutts, Derriaghy. The scheme will introduce fully controlled right turn movements within the signal phasing.
Extensive road widening will be required on the Derriaghy Road side of the McKinstry Road to provide the additional splitter islands required to facilitate the new layout. Shared use footways will be widened as well as staggered and wider pedestrian crossings.
The DfI has said that it has made the decision to move this scheme forward as soon as possible.
An environmental assessment has identified that a number of trees will be required to be remove to facilitate the widening of the carriageway. Any trees removed will be replaced by extensive replanting with a native species on regraded slopes and adjacent areas where possible.
