A new Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) has arrived and started working on a £7.8 million NI Water wastewater network upgrade in Meadow Lane, Portadown.
The TBM which is 1.8 metre in diameter has begun tunnelling around 385m of the new sewer underground. Works will continue until summer 2024 and Meadow Lane will remain open throughout the tunnelling works.
By using innovative trenchless (underground) pipelaying techniques, NI Water's contractor BSG can install the new larger diameter sewer without any impact to motorists or pedestrians in the Meadow Lane area of Portadown.
A major aspect of this NI Water investment is the construction of a new wastewater pumping station which includes a 20m diameter underground storage tank capable of holding 1.5 million litres of stormwater.
The new wastewater infrastructure is set to bolster economic growth and forthcoming development in the region. Moreover, it promises significant environmental advantages for the community, such as mitigating the risk of out-of-sewer flooding and improving water quality in local watercourses through the cessation of storm overflows.
