Redevelopment Plans For Ebrington Approved

Two major planning applications to redevelop the upper section of the former Ebrington barracks site has been approved by Derry City and Strabane District Council's Planning Committee.

One application includes the provision of four mixed use buildings including Grade A Commercial offices, a multi-storey car park with wrap around buildings and two mixed use buildings comprising 32 residential units on the area currently occupied by a surface level visitor carpark and toilet block near the main entrance to the site. A new public square will be created which will include public realm works and associated site access and landscaping works.

The second proposal includes the construction of two residential blocks, totalling 40 apartments, situated alongside Limavady Roads. Additionally, it includes the development of a mixed-use building for creative industries and offices. On-site activities will involve demolishing an existing structure, implementing new landscaping, improving public spaces, and providing parking facilities.

Chair of the Planning Committee, Councillor Sean Mooney, said: "I am delighted to see these plans come before the committee today. This work will entirely transform the upper area of the site, and complement the extensive work that has already been carried out on the main Ebrington Square and surrounding buildings.

"Just this weekend we saw the official launch of the latest business to take up residence as Stitch and Weave opened its doors, adding to the impressive array of businesses now based at Ebrington. And it closely follows the confirmation of the final Letters of Offer for the DNA (Derry~Londonderry on the North Atlantic) Museum.

"The Ebrington site is of major strategic importance to the City and District and these are very exciting times. I want to thank all those involved for their work on this element of the development. I really look forward to seeing work now commence on the ground, as the final pieces of the jigsaw begin to fit into place at Ebrington."
