FP McCann Celebrates 20th Anniversary Of The Toome Bypass

Construction News Image
FP McCann has hosted an event to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Toome Bypass Road bridge over the River Bann at Toomebridge.

Approximately 112 key stage two students (primary five, six and seven) from three local primary schools including St Oliver Plunkett Primary School, Moneynick Primary School and Duneane Primary school were invited to the event.

Workshop one involved the construction of the 'Big Bridge' which is a 15 metre long, 3 metre high cable stay bridge. The students got to construct the deck using teamwork and scaffold support, before connecting the cables. Then each pupil and some teachers crossed the bridge in order to test it. The 'Big Bridge' helps with STEM education in Northern Ireland by providing hands-on, real world experiences that captivate students’ imaginations.

In workshop 2 students were told about how the Toome Bypass bridge was built, how bridges were built historically and finally a talk on green energy using wind turbines as an example.
