Dublin City Council has introduced a programme of enhanced maintenance works aimed at the restoration of Talbot Street in the city-centre.

A fund of approximately €2.5 million has been set aside for the project which is expected to take place for 20 weeks from 10 June.

Over the next five years, the city will be upgrading several streets. This includes creating more inviting public spaces on Cathal Brugha Street, North Earl Street, and Parnell Square. They'll also be planting more trees around the Markets area and revamping Halston Street Park. Plus, Ormond Square and Parnell Street will see environmental improvements.

Talbot Street and its surrounding lanes are home to many historic businesses and is a focal point for transport infrastructure connecting the area to the rest of Ireland via Connolly Station, Busáras, the Luas and a wide variety of Dublin Bus routes. Despite this connectivity and traditional strengths, the area has faced many challenges in recent years. In order to protect and develop the street and surrounding areas, the Council recognised that a concerted effort needed to be made.

The Talbot St scheme will focus on:

•Renewing 5,200 m2 of footpaths and 3,600 m2 of carriageway

•The upgrading and enhancing of the street’s public lighting

•Further investment in street planting and landscaping

In partnership with Irish Rail, DublinTown and local businesses, plans are also being developed to improve other aspects of the area. These include an enhanced shopfront improvement scheme, an events programme, the provision of street art and feature lighting, as well as design improvement works on the Talbot Street bridge to make this historic piece of 19th Century transport infrastructure and its surrounds a more welcoming space and help it become a positive feature and signifier of the district.
