John Sisk & Son (Holdings) Ltd is currently halfway through upgrade works on the Bagenalstown Wastewater Treatment Plant (WTP) on behalf of Uisce Éireann.
Uisce Éireann's substantial investment will more than double the current treatment capacity, from serving a population equivalent of 4,500 to 9,800. Additionally, it will significantly improve the treatment processes at the existing wastewater treatment plant.
The current plant is operating at its maximum design capacity. Uisce Éireann's focused investment is essential to accommodate future social and economic expansion in the region, while also ensuring adherence to national and EU regulations.
Since the commencement of this upgrade project last year, substantial progress has been achieved. This includes the completion of inlet works, a new aeration tank and clarifiers, along with the installation of mechanical equipment. All components are expected to be fully operational by early next year.
Uisce Éireann’s Portfolio Manager Paul Fallon commented on the significant progress being made on this project for the people of Bagenalstown, he said: "The works will be complete in early 2025 but the project will benefit County Carlow for decades to come. When complete, the works will ensure compliance with wastewater treatment regulations and ensure adequate wastewater capacity for future growth. We would like to thank the local community for their support and co-operation as we carry out this work".
Uisce Éireann crews are also busy on the ground in Bagenalstown replacing almost 2.5km of aged and damaged water mains with new modern pipes in the town. These improvement works are a critical step in conserving water and reducing high levels of leakage which have been a significant source of disruption and outages for customers in the area
Works are progressing well with more than 1.3km of the new pipes already installed. Full reinstatement including roads and footpaths have been completed along this stretch of 1.3km.
