Uisce Éireann is currently working to restore the water supply to 25,000 customers in Kerry following a burst to a large water main on the Tralee Regional Supply Scheme.
The areas covered include Tralee Town and its surroundings, Ballinorig, Killeeen Wood, Lisloose, Fenit and Barrow. Water services crews have been deployed to conduct repair work, with efforts being made to complete it as swiftly as possible. Due to the burst’s location, the repairs are complex and are expected to continue until 9pm tonight. It may take several additional hours for the normal water supply to be fully restored to all customers.
Regional Operations Manager for Uisce Éireann, Brian O'Leary said: "Unfortunately this is a large burst to a scheme supplying upwards on 25,000 people. We have crews onsite since early this morning and we are making every effort to repair the burst. We appreciate the inconvenience caused by an unplanned outage of this scale."
In line with best practice, most homes and businesses are equipped with on-site water storage to serve as a backup for sanitation purposes. After the repair work is completed, it generally takes two to three hours for the normal water supply to be fully restored across all areas, particularly for properties on higher ground or located at the end of the network, as the water gradually refills the system.
Following any significant activity on the water network, we usually see increased reports of sediment becoming dislodged from the old cast iron pipes, resulting in discoloured water at customers taps. If your tap water is discoloured, running the tap for up to 20 minutes will usually restore water to a clear colour. Water is safe to drink once the water is running clear. Uisce Éireann continues to advise customers not to drink discoloured water.
