Powerscreen has announced the successful installation and operation of its equipment in Ladakh, Northern India—one of the world's most demanding environments.
A Powerscreen PT400X Jaw Crusher, 1000 Maxtrak Cone Crusher and Chieftain 1700 Screen were commissioned to work on a Border Roads Organisation (BRO) project near Demchok, close to the China border, at Umling La, Leh Ladakh (UT). At an altitude of 19,024 feet, this project is at the world's highest motorable pass and aims to produce road construction materials such as Granular Sub Base (GSB), Wet Mix Macadam (WMM) and aggregates (5mm, 10mm, 20mm).
The site's high altitude posed significant challenges due to low oxygen levels and temperatures dropping to -23°C during the project. The hilly terrain, characterised by sharp bends and a lack of feasible roads, further complicated the transportation and installation of the equipment.
Powerscreen equipment is specifically designed to perform reliably in extreme climatic conditions, thanks to its robust engineering, advanced technology and rigorous testing with quality materials to withstand harsh environments, including high altitudes. Its innovative design allows for dismantling and reassembly, which facilitates transportation and installation in difficult, inaccessible terrains. To navigate the rough landscape, the service team expertly dismantled the equipment for transport and reassembled it on site. Despite the severe conditions, they successfully completed the installation and commissioning within 15 days.
The Powerscreen PT400X Jaw Crusher has been set up as the primary crusher and takes large and variable sized feed material to be fed into the 1000 Maxtrak Cone Crusher, which uses Automax® crusher technology to provide high volumes of excellently shaped, consistent product. This material is then screened by the Chieftain 1700 Screen to separate the product into its various sizes.
The successful deployment of Powerscreen equipment at Umling La has enabled the BRO to produce the materials needed for their road project, ensuring the continuation of crucial infrastructure development in the region. This infrastructure will enhance access to remote villages, making it easier for residents to travel for medical care, education, and other essential services. Additionally, the road will facilitate the delivery of goods and services, contributing to the overall socio-economic growth of the area. Improved connectivity will also benefit local businesses and tourism, with the world’s highest motorable road attracting tourists and providing new income opportunities for locals through homestays, guided tours and local crafts.
Ranga Swamy, Director of Customer and Product Support, said: "This project underscores Powerscreen's commitment to delivering high-performance solutions in the most challenging environments,” said . “We are incredibly proud of our service team’s exceptional efforts and resilience in overcoming the extreme conditions at Umling La. Their dedication and technical expertise were crucial in achieving this high-altitude installation."
