Work has begun at hospital sites across Northern Ireland as part of preparations to eliminate car parking charges by May 2026.
Health and Social Care Trusts are installing the necessary infrastructure for a new traffic management system, following the passing of the Hospital Parking Charges Act by the Northern Ireland Assembly in 2022. Initial site work is now underway at Musgrave Park Hospital in Belfast, Daisy Hill Hospital in Newry, and Craigavon Area Hospital, with additional sites set to follow in the coming weeks.
This phase involves minor infrastructure works and the installation of Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras. Specialist engineers have conducted site surveys to determine the number, type, and locations of the more than 200 cameras required across 16 hospital sites. The surveys also assessed environmental conditions to ensure smooth implementation.
Until the system becomes operational in 2026, existing parking charges will remain in place, and users are advised to continue paying as normal.
Over the next few months, engineering teams will focus on erecting camera poles and preparing sites for the new system, marking a significant step towards improved access and reduced financial burdens for patients, staff, and visitors across Northern Ireland's healthcare facilities.
