An investment of €12.5m has been made by Uisce Éireann for essential upgrades to the Killybegs Water Treatment Plant in County Donegal.
The works, which are being carried out by EPS Group on behalf of Uisce Éireann, will benefit more than 4,000 customers by providing a more reliable and sustainable drinking supply.
As the town possesses the largest fishing port in Ireland, the upgrades will also be crucial to Killybegs' fish processing industry.
Due to its limited capacity currently, the water treatment plant faces potential for supply disruptions and also lacks sufficient facilities for sludge treatment.
However, works are well underway with the construction of the sludge and disinfection tanks already complete.
Construction of the sludge building has commenced, and the chemical building will be the next phase of construction. Following that, Uisce Éireann will focus on the mechanical and electrical installations with an expected completion date next autumn.
Uisce Éireann's Programme Manager, John McElwaine, said: "This investment by Uisce Éireann will support the economic and social development of the communities living in this beautiful part of County Donegal.
"Crucially, this upgraded infrastructure will also accommodate future population growth. We're grateful for the support of the people of Killybegs as we continue to progress the delivery of this essential project."
