Sinn Féin has stated the Irish government's housing plan is not working following reports of a 9% price increase last year.
The party's spokesperson on housing, Eoin Ó Broin TD, highlighted the data from the Q4 2024 house price report from Daft.ie, and cited it as evidence that the country's crisis has not yet turned a positive corner. Instead, the Dublin Mid-West TD believes the situation has only gotten worse.
Deputy Ó Broin said: "The conclusion from the latest Daft.ie house price report is a devastating critique of the government's housing policy. The report described 2024 as 'the least successful year for policy-makers since 2017'.
"House prices have increased by 9% state-wide in the last year. Twelve counties experienced double-digit inflation.
"The rate of inflation in Dublin has accelerated again, after lagging behind the state-wide average for some time. This is particularly bad news for the capital's economy, which is struggling to attract and retain public and private sector workers because of high housing costs.
"The Daft.ie report also highlights the ongoing decline in second hand properties coming to the market, which is undermining the limited growth in new supply."
He added: "Only a dramatic increase in investment in and delivery of social and affordable housing will address housing need.
"Sinn Féin will continue to make the case for a radical reset of housing policy this year as set out in our alternative housing plan, A Home of Your Own."
