Construction works for a new Garda District Headquarters in County Limerick have officially commenced.
Once completed, the Newcastle West Headquarters will be a 3-storey building based on the site of the former Garda Station, which was demolished in 2023 before enabling works were completed last year.
This new station is part of a large programme of work to upgrade the Garda estate.
The OPW and An Garda Síochána, with the support of the Department of Justice, are working to improve and modernise Garda facilities across the country, including with various energy efficiencies.
To support this work, over €220 million has been invested in the Garda estate between 2020 and 2024.
A further €128 million for Garda estates projects is also being distributed in 2025 and 2026 under the National Development Plan.
Yesterday, Minister Patrick O'Donovan, Minister of State for the Office of Public Works Kieran O'Donnell and Commissioner Drew Harris attended the site of the Newcastle West development.
Minister O'Donovan said: "It is with great pleasure that I am here today to witness this significant milestone in the delivery of a new Garda station for the people of Newcastle West.
"The construction of this new Garda station is such an important development for policing in Limerick. As well as providing a modern fit-for-purpose facility for Garda members and the visiting public, the station will meet a very high environmental standard.
"During my time as Minister of State for the OPW, I saw the project go to tender and I am delighted to be here today to mark the commencement of works on site."
Meanwhile, Minister O'Donnell added: "This purpose built Garda station will provide modern, value for money and energy efficient accommodation that will assist members of An Garda Síochána in the delivery of their work."
